Kipps goes to Cabarete with windsurf gear for Pablito’s kids

This is a story of Kipps Zygarewicz ūüôā

“I became acquainted with the Beyond Boardshorts project during the fundraiser they held in June at H.S. Lordships in Berkeley (which was a great party, by the way!). The highlight of this event for me were the video presentations of what Bryan, Tyson, and Wyatt are trying to accomplish. Beyond the great fun these guys have and the infectious love for the sport that they exude, there was a compelling mission and purpose: that of putting windsurfing equipment in the hands of young kids who are in no position to procure it themselves, and in doing so, open new horizons to them. Their vision touched me deeply. And as life would have it, i had the opportunity to become a part of this movement.

i had in place for a couple of weeks later a trip that would take me to the Dominican Republic, one of the places of interest to BeyondBoardshorts. And while this trip was not a wind-centred trip, i had programmed the possibility popping in to Cabarete to get a couple of days on the water. I also remembered that i had in my garage a small board that had given me countless hours of joy but i had not touched in a handful of years and thought it would make a good board for a grom there. So a couple of days after the party i contacted Wyatt, Tyson and Bryan to ask them to whether my intended contribution would be helpful and if so, to arrange contact with Pablito, a local man who runs a kids windsurfing program in Cabarete. They immediately replied to tell me that not only would my board be put to good use down there… but, would i also be able to take some kids’ rigs that others had already donated to the cause? I agreed and we promptly coordinated to get the equipment in my hands and packed for the trip. In the meantime, they also alerted the folks at Vela Cabarete who work with Pablito that I’d be coming bringing some material.

And off i flew… but as i mentioned, this wasn’t a wind-centred trip, and there were several days and a couple of other stops before i would be anywhere near Cabarete to hand the kit over to Pablito. I would be lying if i told you that as i schlepped that kit around on the early part of my itinerary i didn’t ask myself what i had gotten myself into… but inside i always knew that the purpose was bigger than my temporary inconvenience.

And indeed it was!!

I met up with Pablito on a Saturday as he was conducting one his series of fun races where his kids get a chance to compete and hone their race skills. With the day’s racing completed, i had a chance to meet some of the local groms, and then turn over to Pablito the equipment i had brought. He explained to me some more details of the program he runs with incredible dedication. His joy and excitement were palpable as he examined each piece of equipment and rattled off names of kids that would be the beneficiaries of the project’s effort.

I barely got a couple of hours’ riding time in Cabarete, but that didn’t matter much… what mattered much more to me was the satisfaction i felt from knowing that, in a small way, i had made a positive difference in the lives of some kids, and that from that day forward they and i would be sharing, if thousands of miles apart, the great joy that windsurfing gives.

Thank you Tyson, Wyatt, and Bryan for having the vision to make this possible!”

Take a trip to Cuba with Beyond Boardshorts

“We traveled to a country where we needed more windsurfing equipment to donate!”

We never expected that Cuba would be exploding with windsurfing enthusiasts!  What we first thought would be an easy decision of who we would donate gear to we quickly realized it would not be that easy.

Throughout our trip we found a windsurfing club, a youth sailing school and a lot of individual windsurfers. ¬†As our friendships with the locals grew, we were inspired, shared smiles, enjoyed the wind together and made life long memories. ¬†At the end of our two week trip, ¬†the Beyond Boardshorts team joined together and with much deliberation we decided who we would donate the gear to…

Armando Diaz:

Armando was the most generous person we had met during our trip. He is the type of guy that spends his long days working at his job and if there is the slightest breeze towards the end of his work day, he is off to the beach.  Once he arrives at the beach his gear explodes out of his car and before he feels the sweet relief of the water across his face he hands his stuff over to a nearby eager sailer to go first.  We knew that by gifting Armando the equipment we would be gifting it to the enthusiastic community he generously shares with daily.

Equipment Gifted

  • Starboard freewave 103L Board
  • Severne Concert 6.0 Sail
  • No Limitz mast
  • Chinook base and universal
  • Severne aluminium boom.
  • Makani Kohola V2 fin

 Wilver Llanes:

Wilver was constantly wearing the biggest smile across his face as he sailed along the water, we agreed that he was one of the most eager kids that we had met. When we thought about who eluded the most happiness on and off the land, one person really stood out… Wilver. ¬†His motivation to be on the water was truly contagious. He was so proud to share his love for his country and his love for windsurfing with us that he invited us to join him in his home town to spend a day and sail with him. ¬†One of our fondest memories in Cuba.

 Equipment Gifted

  • NeilPryde carbon boom
  • Chinook carbon extension
  • Chinook base
  • S2 Maui 4.5 jester
  • NoLimitz 370 sumo mast
  • Dakine harness lines

These two individuals are who we would classify as “well-deserving.” ¬†Our mission at Beyond Boardshorts is to seek out individuals who are truly passionate, hard working and who would benefit the most from receiving water sport equipment.

Cuba left a special place in all of our hearts and we will be finding a way to get back there with a big boat full of a lot of equipment.

If any one has said boat…. call us….

Thanks for watching the episode and sharing the stoke with us!

Sail on,

The who, what, when, where, why and HOW?!

Here we go…. Our first ever blog post!
¬†I suppose we should start where every good story begins….

At the beginning…

This is a story about professional windsurfers Wyatt Miller, Tyson Poor and Bryan Metcalf Perez who have spent their entire lives traveling to the vast waters of the world windsurfing and generating as much stoke as possible for the future generations of water sports enthusiasts. They come from the crisp blue waters of Maui to the raging rapids of the Columbia River and have always ventured out to new waters to meet the locals, get a taste of the culture, and spend as much time as possible exploring the depths of the deep blue.

Driven by passion, adventure and the desire to GIVE BACK to the sport that has forever influenced the three amigos, they have set sail with the mission to bring their passion for water sports to the worlds youth by providing inspiration, training and equipment to kids who would not otherwise be able to participate in water sports.

Just to start…. They will do this by creating a movement that inspires others to travel to their favorite locations with equipment that they will leave to a deserving local kid as well as they will generate excitement for others to travel with the BEYOND Boardshorts crew to various locations to hand deliver gear.

The movement has begun everyone!!! So lets find ways to join together and get these kids an alternative after school activity that involves smiling faces and the healthy lifestyle of athleticism.

Stay tuned for our 1st episode release in January followed by Magazine articles, many press releases, FUN fundraising events and calls to action and much much more!
